  • Notes
  • The Creed Type 6S/3 is a motor-driven single-head mechanical reader or "automatic transmitter" for standard 5-hole 11/16 in (17.5 mm) wide punched paper tape. It is one of a series of readers ranging from the Type 6S, introduced by Creed & Company in 1926, to the Type 6S/6 in 1958. Suffix -M indicates an auto message model with a 50v 20 mA electromagnetic clutch, while suffix -N indicates an auto numbering machine fitted with a letter-shift detector and reels to carry a message numbering tape. The British Post Office gave the machines different Model Nos, and the 6S/3 was designated Model 1B.

The reader is powered by a 100/120v shunt-wound DC motor with a centrifugal governor. For 50 Bauds (66 wpm) earlier machines ran at 3000 rpm and later ones at 1500 rpm. The governors are painted with white segments for speed measurement with a stroboscope or a 125 Hz tuning fork with shutter tines. They can readily be adjusted for 45.45 Baud (60 wpm) operation.

The reading head has a sprocket drive and a skewed pecker mechanism for sensing the punched holes in sequence across the tape while it advances with constant velocity. The peckers which have entered punched holes are carried forward with the moving tape. (Simpler step-by-step feed of the paper tape was introduced from the later Type 6S/5, Post Office Model 2A). The start and stop impulses are inserted automatically. The output of the reader is a changeover electrical contact, as for a teleprinter.
