Rubber Friction!

Colleagues, could someone help me? Friend's tip Belcanto 1010. Turntable's ruined the rubber friction wheel, the original diameter someone you know?

Hi Sandor.

Before recommending what to do, perhaps it's worth mentioning that the diameter of the rubber friction wheel (usually called an idler wheel or inter-wheel) has no effect on the speed of the turntable since it is merely transmitting its linear velocity from the motor pulley to the inner rim of the turntable. What is important is the flexibility/hardness of the idler wheel since this item not only hardens with age (a little like us), but it can also become polished/glazed and the combination of these two factors can lead to a lack of traction between motor pulley and turntable. So, how to increase the traction or friction? The edge of the idler wheel can be roughened up with medium grade emery paper or wet/dry paper, say 200 grit to begin with and 400 to finish. This is best done rotationally in a drill chuck at slow speed for a minute or two. The idea is not to wear off a lot of material, but just to remove the outer polish or glaze to reveal some 'new' rubber to improve the traction. In addition, the motor pulley can also become polished/glazed with extended use and may also benefit from similar treatment, but this time use only 600 grit and then only for a few seconds while the motor pulley is spinning, just enough time to dull the surface on each step of the pulley. Don't forget also to give the inside drive surface of the turntable a good clean with a small amount of soft scrubbing agent as used on stainless steel kitchen sinks or bathroom fixtures, the idea again being just to increase the surface friction and get rid of any tyre marks, not to scour it. Finally, clean all the surfaces with some rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol.

Kind regards, Stan Roberts
