  • The Duanode tuning condenser, introduced in October 1923 by the Fallon Condenser Co., was one of the earliest examples of a ganged variable tuning capacitor designed to simplify wireless set operation.

    Technical Description
    The Duanode comprised two matched variable air condensers mounted on a single common spindle, enabling the simultaneous tuning of two separate resonant circuits with one control knob. Each half consisted of fixed stator vanes carefully insulated from each other, and a shared set of rotor vanes electrically interconnected through the spindle. This arrangement allowed the spindle to be tied directly to the high-tension (H.T.) positive supply, a typical practice in tuned anode high-frequency (H.F.) amplifier circuits.

    Each section of the Duanode condenser was rated at approximately 0.0002 µF (200 pF). The halves could be employed either independently or connected in series or parallel, thereby adjusting the effective capacity available to the designer. When matched coils were used, the device permitted accurate simultaneous tuning of successive tuned anode circuits, reducing the trial-and-error process of separately adjusting multiple tuning dials.

    Purpose and Applications
    The chief objective of the Duanode condenser was to simplify the alignment of wireless receivers employing two tuned H.F. amplifier stages. Before its introduction, operators typically required a separate condenser and dial for each tuned stage, making set-up and tuning a laborious process. By ganging the two condensers on one spindle, Fallon provided a practical step towards easier receiver operation.

    Although the Duanode represented a notable innovation in 1923, the widespread practice of using independent tuning controls persisted throughout the 1920s. It was not until the early 1930s, with the growing adoption of fully ganged multi-section condensers in commercial receivers, that single-dial tuning became standardised.
