The little window above the tuning scale is the Ferranti Magnascopic Tuning system, whereby the short wave wavelength is projected onto a translucent screen by use of the dial lamp, a small lens and two mirrors. For this purpose there is a second round scale for the short wave behind the large scale on the front. The result is that the reading is increased and more accurate to tune.
Many different models use this same Bakelite case. Though there are several varieties of shape of tuning scale, many look almost identical with similar scales, so are easily confused.
