The Lafayette model 147-A amplifier is a remote control operated unit that can be mounted in a car in the same manner as an ordinary auto radio receiver. It can be used in pleasure cars or in commercial vehicles with equal facility, and in all cases it provides exceptionally fine tone quality.

The amplifier is well suited for use in systems installed in street advertising trucks, political ballyhoo and speech mobile units (especially important in a presidential election year such as 1936), police alarm systems, etc. The amplifier can easily be manipulated by the driver of the car, while car is in motion, by means of the handy steering column remote control unit. The amplifier uses four tubes in a powerful four-stage circuit as follows: 1-6C6 as a voltage amplifier. 1-79 as a phase inverter, and 2-6B5's in a push-pull output stage. An output of 15 watts is delivered into a 500-ohm line with 9% harmonic content; this harmonic content is allowable for all operating conditions encountered in mobile sound truck work. Peak power output afforded is 18 watts. Gain is ample for direct use of crystal or velocity (close talking) type microphones without the need for additional pre-amplification. Frequency response is exceptionally fine—within 3 db from 50 to 10,000 c.p.s.
