• By 1912–1913, Marconi was offering commercial receivers incorporating Fleming valves. A British version known as the Valve Tuner used Fleming oscillation valves as detectors. The receiver employed tuned circuits and required high-resistance headphones. Interestingly, two valves were often fitted, but only one operated at a time while the second served as a spare because valve life was uncertain and replacements were expensive.
