  • Type SE 84 Tone Tester crystal set.  This was made for the Navy by Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co of America in 1918-1919 for spark gap transmitter operators to monitor the tone of their transmissions. These were built for the Navy by several other manufacturers. See also the Lowenstein Tone Tester and the Kilbourne & Clark Tone Tester.

    Tap switch was tuned to 300, 600 or 900 meters to allow the operators to hear and verify the tone produced by the quenched or rotary spark gap.
