Crystal Receiving Set No.1

The No. 1 Meccano Crystal Receiver was introduced in 1923 as a factory‑assembled crystal set for licensed broadcast reception. It followed the earlier RS1 and RS2 crystal receivers of 1922, refining their design and presentation for the growing domestic radio market.

Constructed from standard Meccano parts on a wood baseplate, the set used a single tuned circuit with a variable condenser and coil, feeding a cat‑whisker crystal detector and high‑impedance headphones. Meccano advertised that, with a good aerial, the set could receive telephony up to 25 miles from a broadcasting station and Morse signals up to 100 miles.

The No. 1 model was sold complete, tested, and guaranteed, and could be used with a British Post Office broadcasting licence costing 10 shillings.
