RS 2

The Meccano RS1 and RS2 were the first radio receivers produced by Meccano Ltd. in 1922. Both were simple crystal sets constructed from standard Meccano parts mounted on a metal baseplate.

• RS1 was supplied fully assembled.
• RS2 was sold as a constructional kit, allowing the user to build the set following Meccano’s illustrated instructions.

Each receiver used a single tuned circuit with a variable condenser and coil, feeding a cat‑whisker crystal detector and headphones. Frequency range ~830 kHz (360 m).

The design was promoted for its simplicity and efficiency, suitable for reception within about 25 miles of a broadcasting station.

The sets were tested in London, Paris, and New York, where they successfully received concerts and telegraphic messages. Meccano’s Radio Department at Binns Road offered support and instruction leaflets to builders.
