L'antenne AT-197/GR faisant l'objet de la présente spécification est destinée à être utilisée comme antenne pour des émetteurs-récepteurs radio au sol tels que les AN/GRC-27, AN/GRC-29 et AN/TRC-32, afin d'assurer les communications avec des aéronefs équipés de postes radio de commandement UHF ainsi qu'avec les stations UHF au sol requises dans la zone terminale UHF.

Il convient de noter que la spécification militaire d'origine était la MIL-A-4946 (1er mai 1950) ; elle a été remplacée au fil des ans par la MIL-A-4946 B, puis rebaptisée MIL-DTL-4946(C/D/E).

Note that the original military specification document was MIL-A-4946 (1 May, 1950) and was superseded over the years by MIL-A-4946 B, and later renamed to MIL-DTL-4946(C/D/E).
