Scorpio 68000 - Chess Computer
Introduced alongside the luxury Diablo 68000 in late 1991, the Scorpio 68000 was Novag’s high-performance mid-range desktop chess computer. It was engineered to offer tournament-grade 16-bit processing power at a significantly lower price point (£299 vs £599 for the Diablo).
Hardware Twins:
Internally, the Scorpio features the exact same motherboard, 16 MHz Motorola 68000 processor, memory configuration, and 96 KB chess program written by David Kittinger as the wooden Diablo 68000. The primary difference lies in the cabinet construction and board sensor type: the Scorpio uses an ABS plastic housing with a press-sensory board, whereas the Diablo uses a hand-crafted wooden cabinet with automatic magnetic reed sensors.Advanced Features & Legacy:
Like its twin, the Scorpio featured advanced tournament functions rare for mid-range units of the era, including selective search algorithms, transposition hash tables (64 KB RAM allocation), custom programmable opening books, and an RS-232 serial link for computer integration. It remains a popular milestone unit among computer chess collectors.Technical Specifications
