  • Notes
  • Painton Quadrant Fader uses switched resistors for sound level control in studio control desks.

Traditional potentiometers utilize a sliding electrical contact that moves across a resistive element to vary resistance. While a cost-effective option, this design can be susceptible to wear and tear from the constant movement of the contact. Additionally, dust accumulation on the resistive layer can affect signal quality.

    Switched Resistor: A Durable Alternative

Switched resistors offer an alternative approach. They employ a rotary switch that selects pre-determined fixed resistors. This design boasts several advantages:

    • Improved Contact Quality: By eliminating the sliding contact, switched resistors provide a more reliable and consistent electrical connection.
    • Enhanced Durability: The lack of moving parts makes switched resistors less prone to wear and tear over time.
    • Reduced Sensitivity to Dust: Since there's no exposed resistive layer, dust has minimal impact on performance.

However, switched resistors typically come at a higher cost compared to slider potentiometers.
