The Philips FM 650 SD was the final UHF mobile CB transceiver marketed by Philips Australia, marking the end of the company’s long involvement in the Australian CB market. Released in the early 1990s, the model continued the familiar Philips mobile CB design language established with the FM 320 series in the late 1970s. The chassis, control layout, and mechanical construction show clear lineage, with only minor cosmetic and functional updates.
The FM 650 SD employed a processor‑controlled PLL synthesizer, providing stable operation across the 40‑channel UHF CB band (476–477 MHz). The radio was built as a robust, work‑ready mobile unit and was commonly supplied with a Philips dynamic microphone. Some examples in the field include duplex (repeater) capability, reflecting the growing use of UHF repeaters in Australia during this period. This model is historically significant as the last Philips‑branded UHF CB transceiver, produced shortly before Philips withdrew from the CB radio market entirely.
