AM/SSB CB Base Station P400

The President P400 is a 40‑channel AM/SSB base station developed for the Australian CB market in the 1980s and stands as one of the final President‑branded base units sold locally before the shift to Uniden‑controlled branding. Distributed by Santronics Agencies, it appears to have been produced in relatively small numbers, contributing to its scarcity today. The set employs the MB8719 PLL, a respected and easily modified synthesizer also used in several high‑end President and Uniden radios of the era. Its front panel includes a 7‑segment digital channel display, clarifier, RF and microphone gain controls, a mode selector, and a front‑facing speaker.

While its chassis and control layout clearly reflect the design lineage of the President Washington, the P400 features distinct cosmetics and labeling tailored to the Australian market. Closely related to the Washington sold in the United States and other global regions, the P400 shares similar internal architecture and the MB8719 platform; however, the Washington—introduced around 1978—served as a U.S./international flagship, whereas the P400 was a later, Australia‑specific variant with its own branding and distribution path. Owing to its limited release and its position at the end of the President era in Australia, the P400 is considerably rarer than the Washington and is now of particular interest to collectors of Australian CB equipment.
