  • Notes
  • Grinel Electronics in South Africa was formerly Racal (Also known as GRC and Milcom). Their version called TR48 but still with Racal "Syncal 30" logo at knobs included all the Racal versions. In addition they supplied version with an extra toggle switch and a similar RCA CDP1802 mpu based card for "Frequency hopping" encryption (early Spread Spectrum) as used in the TR16. The hopping code is set by using the frequency decade knobs and then using the toggle switch. While there are technically 1 kHz channels from 1.6MHZ to 29.999MHZ, the "Search" knob allows more than +/- 1kHz variation. Reception is possible from 100kHz upward. Only Transmission is limited to 1.6MHz and above. Modes are AM, USB and LSB on receive and Transmit, with USB or LSB can be used with a key for morse code (CW). The Whip tuner (6' to 11' whip or other aerials, normal is 8') is integral and the TX power meter has a left and right pair of LEDs to show the operator which direction to wind the tuning coil. The Tuning unit is a 7cm insulated drum (approx) beside a metal spindle. Gold plated wire braided on cord is wound on/off the Drum from/to the spindle to vary inductance in series with with the aerial whip. Transmit power is about 5W on AM and 22W on CW or SSB peak 74 series logic for synthesiser. All RF, IF and AF is transistors. Some 723 IC regulators. Extensively used by Iraqi in 1st Gulf War.
