Hi Fi Stereo Amplifier SM-33
Stereo vacuum‑tube receiver with mono FM and MW/SW AM tuner. Hybrid construction: vacuum‑tube RF/IF and power‑amplifier stages with transistorised low‑level preamplifier circuits. FM stereo requires an external multiplex (MPX) decoder connected via the rear RCA MPX IN/OUT jacks.
The receiver includes two AM tuning sections, each with its own tuning capacitor. The second AM IF/detector chain provides a buffered IF‑level monitor point (rear terminal AM‑Ch.2) for alignment and service use; it is not a separate AM program tuner and does not provide a baseband AM detector audio output. The schematic’s internal “AM OUT” is an audio‑level detector feed to the selector switch and is not brought to the rear panel. FM employs a 10.7 MHz IF strip with ratio detector and switchable AFC.
Two magic‑eye indicators provide left/right tuning and level display.
Audio output uses push‑pull 6BM8 (ECL82) pentodes with fixed bias. Tone controls are passive. Low‑level phono and tape‑head stages use germanium transistors.
Rear‑panel signal connections include:
Three screw‑terminal IF test points:
- AM‑Ch.1 (AM IF)
- FM (FM IF; corresponds to schematic “AM1 OUT”)
- AM‑Ch.2 (second AM IF/detector chain, IF level)
RCA jacks:
- MPX OUT (FM composite)
- MPX IN
- Tape Monitor OUT/IN
Construction is point‑to‑point with Sansui‑made transformers.
Related model: Sansui SM‑30, which uses the same dual‑AM architecture and MPX facilities..
