  • Notes
  • The Currawong amplifier is a stereo audio amplifier based on a design by Grant Wills in 2003 incorporating cheap, readily available 100V audio line transformers with the line impedance taps used in the class-AB ultra-linear output stage.

The Silicon Chip design used two 12AX7’s as pre-amp and phase splitter with two 6L6 beam power Triodes as the push-pull output stage, per channel. It also incorporated a delayed B+ soft start circuit.

It was described in Silicon Chip in November, December 2014 and January 2015.

It sold on kit form, without a case from Altronics Pty. Ltd. for around $700.

The Editor of Silicon Chip, Nicholas Vinen explains that the Currawong name recognises the very musical call of the bird.

A Pied Currawong is an Australian native bird about the size of a Crow or Raven and is mostly all black except for the telling white wing & tail feathers. Known for its melodious calls, the species' name currawong is believed to be of indigenous origin.
