Transceiver ICB-87R

The Sony ICB‑87R is an 8‑channel FM handheld transceiver designed for the Japanese legal CB band (26.968–27.144 MHz). It represents Sony’s final CB radio model and one of the last legal CB sets ever manufactured in Japan. The set provides 500 mW RF output and operates exclusively on the fixed Japanese CB allocation. It uses a long multi‑section telescopic antenna measuring approximately 197 cm when fully extended, with the upper sections made from a different unplated alloy. The antenna incorporates Sony’s angle‑adjustable hinge system and a mechanical interlock that forces the power switch off when the antenna is locked in the stowed position. The radio is powered by eight AA cells housed in the rear battery compartment. The front panel includes a large, clear meter similar to the earlier ICB‑870 but with a softer speaker surround for improved ergonomics. The channel selector is a smooth rotary switch, and the cabinet follows Sony’s late‑era CB styling with a compact but tall handheld form factor.

Later units use a smaller, simplified compliance sticker and are associated with reduced sensitivity and shorter communication range. No functional changes were documented by Sony, but collector experience consistently distinguishes the two versions.

The ICB‑87R is historically significant as Sony’s final CB transceiver and one of the last legal Japanese CB radios to reach the domestic market. Its discontinuation marked the end of Japanese‑made handheld CB sets, with no major manufacturer continuing production afterward. The model remains actively used by Japanese CB enthusiasts, especially during Sporadic‑E seasons, and is well suited to portable and mountaintop operation.
