  • Notes
  • The SyQuest SQ200 drive, which was introduced in 1994, is an AC mains powered external SCSI drive that uses SQ2000 5.25" 200 MB removable hard disk cartridges. Note that the reference SQ200 had previously been used by SyQuest for a lower capacity disk, that was used with SQ312RD drives. The cartridges have a spring-loaded shutter and a rotary write-protect selector. The SQ200 drive can also read older SQ400 (44 MB) and SQ800 (88 MB) 5.25" disks.

The SQ200 has two SCSI ports, and a terminator should be fitted if the drive is not daisy chained to other SCSI devices. The SCSI address is selected by a thumbwheel switch on the rear panel. The drive is cooled by a small fan.

To load a cartridge, open the drive cover by depressing the lip and fully insert the cartridge, then push the load/unload lever to the left. The drive will spin up the disk, and is ready when the orange activity LED extinguishes and the adjacent green LED lights. (Not the green LED at the left side of the front panel, which merely indicates AC power on). To unload a cartridge, close all open files (on Macintosh by dragging the icon to the trash) and press the eject button. The green LED will extinguish, the activity LED will start to flicker, the load/unload lever will pop out, and the drive will begin to spin down. When the activity LED goes out, push the lever fully to the right. The cartridge will then eject sufficiently to be gripped by hand and removed. The drive should not be powered down until the cartridge has been removed.

The drive was manufactured in Taiwan, and the disks were made in Singapore.

After the bankruptcy of SyQuest and the acquisition of portions of the company by Iomega Corp in 1998, a new company SYQT Inc continued to sell remaining inventory and support SyQuest products for several more years.
