Diese Firma (jap.: Tokyo Denki) wurde 1899 gegründet und wurde damals zum größten Produzenten von Glühlampen in Japan. Ab 1916 kamen Elektronenröhren hinzu und in den 20er Jahren Geräte der Funktechnik, für einige Jahre auch Heim-Radios. Anfang 1939 fusionierte die Tokyo Electric mit der Shibaura Engineering Co. zur Tokyo Shibaura Denki, die umgangssprachlich Toshiba genannt wurde. Erst 1978 erhielt die Firma auch offiziell den Naman Toshiba Co.
