History: |
The company was founded in 1981 and incorporated in 1985 as TCL Telecommunication Equipment Co Ltd. It began manufacturing consumer electronics for the Chinese market during the 1980s, and began to sell overseas in the 2000s. Though a state-owned enterprise, TCL was established as a joint venture with several Hong Kong-based investors. [1] In January 2003, TCL's subsidiary Schneider Electronics began full operations in Germany. [2] TCL and the french Thomson S.A. company set up a joint venture called TCL Thomson Electronic (TTE) in November 2003. TTE was then the world's biggest television manfucaturer, their TVs were to be sold under the Thomson and Schneider brands in Europe and under RCA in North America (the RCA and GE consumer electronics business having been aquired from GE by Thomson in 1987/1988) and under the TCL brand in Asia. The Thomson and RCA brands remained under the control of Thomson S.A. After accumulating heavy losses, the french-based TTE Europe SAS filed for insolvency in 2007 [3] and TCL withdrew from the European market.
