W.G. Watson & Co. Ltd.

Electrical supplies and installations, reseller / retailer.

The brand Switchon was used for a number of products:

  • British made Switchon accumulators (1910s)
  • Switchon curcuit breakers (1910s)
  • G. E. Edison Switchon incandescent lamps with drawn wire filaments (1910s-1920s)
  • Switchon radio sets (mid-1930s)

It is currently unknown if Watson used the brand by permission, if they acquired or registered it, or if they just resold Switchon equipment made by an as of yet undetermined manufacturer.

History:

First advertisements appear in July 1911 with the company offering "Switchon" metal lamps. By 1919 they advertised as electrical engineers, suppliers and contractors from Clarence Street with a bulk store at Kent Street. In March 1934 they sold Lekmek radio receivers.

By June 1934 they advertised the "Switchon" superhet all wave 7 valve and broadcast 5 valve sets for sale. It is not known if they manufactured these sets or they were rebadged. They also opened a branch in Adelaide. Their final radio advertisement appears in late 1935, however their electrical business continued until the 1950s.

This manufacturer was suggested by Gary Cowans.
