Ward Products Corp. Trade names: Ward, Minute Man. Manufacturer of car and home antennas and accessories (AM, FM, TV); sound systems. |
Founded: | 1935 |
History: |
Ward Products Corp., was likely founded by the Wiesenberger brothers, Ralph N. (-1973), Harry R. (-1969), and Arthur E. (1893-1944) around 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1940, Ralph was listed as the President, Harry as the Vice President and Secretary, and Arthur as the Treasurer. Their initial product category was primarily car aerials (antennas), with one mention of sound systems. Later, they expanded into home radio FM & TV antennas and accessories. In 1937, they moved to their new facility at 1523 E. 45th St., Cleveland, Ohio. The factory space was doubled and the sales offices were enlarged. Ward also had a branch in Canada and an export office in New York City. In 1940, the 136 employees were all awarded surprise bonus checks by the Wiesenberger brothers at a company dinner, who in turn, presented the brothers with a handsome bronze plaque. Like most companies during WW2, their commercial production was converted to military use to support the war effort. They were acquired by the Gabriel Co. around 1948 and became Ward Products Corp., a Division of the Gabriel Co. The plant suspended operations on June 30, 1957. The Ward division was then acquired by another newly formed entity named Ward Products Corp. in Amsterdam, New York, and production was moved there shortly after. |
