Watkins Johnson started in Palo Alto, California as a manufacturer of traveling wave tubes. They were expanding steadily based predominately on innovative microwave devices and Air Force missile and space contracts. The Watkins Johnson Company has been founded in 1957 and produced telecommunications equipment and semiconductors. The Watkins Johnson receivers and telecommunication equipments has been mostly used by military services and agencies.The Telecommunications Group (Division) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been subsequently sold to Marconi, BAE Systems and Integrated Defense Technologies IDT and has finally been taken over by DRS Technologies Inc. in 2003. |

Die Watkins-Johnson Company wurde 1957 in Palo Alto, CA, gegründet. Die Watkins-Johnson Company Telecommunications Group erstellte ab 1966 in Gaithersburg Kommunikationsequipment her und beschäftigte zuletzt 450 Angestellte.
Die Geräte von Watkins-Johnson erwarben sich rasch einen guten Namen als High-Tech-Empfänger bei militärischen und Geheimdienststellen.
Wohl nach 1998 wurde Watkins-Johnson von Marconi und dann von BAE SYSTEMS North America (British Aerospace) übernommen. Der Standort Gaithersburg wurde 2002 für 146 mio US$ von Integrated Defense Technologies IDT und diese im November 2003 von DRS Technologies Inc. (DRS Electronic Systems, Inc., 200 Professional Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20879) übernommen.
In the late 1960s, Watkins Johnson (WJ) purchased Communications Electronics Inc. (CEI) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, which became its Communication Electronics division. Prior to this purchase, Watkins Johnson did not manufacture radios for surveillance use.
