Hallo Spiros,

there is no American equivalent to this tube.

As a makeshift, you can substitute the EAF801 by an EBF89. The EBF89 contains additionally to its penthode unit 2 diode units, where the EAF801 has only 1 diode.

The internal shield of the EAF801 is lead out to a separate pin to be connected to ground. Though the internal shield of the EBF89 is connected to cathode internally.

Since the cathode of the EAF801 may not be at ground potential in its normal circuit, replacing the EAF801 by an EBF89 may detoriate the performance of the receiver. If the performance is still sufficient, you can leave the EBF89.

BR, Jacob

Hello Mr. Hellas ,

So far as I know, there is no American equivalent for the EAF 801 available

Go ahead and test this valve as follow:

Pentode

V heater 6,3 V AC

V Plate + 200 V DC

V Grid 1       zero V

V Grid 2 + 60 V  DC

Plate currency > 7 mA should be good

Diode

V Plate  10 V  AC

Plate currency > O,3 mA should be good

I hope it will help you.

I wish you a great success

Best regards  from the Black Forest  Wolfram Zylka

Several times, I found EAF801 which had internal shorts or built up a poor isolation between grid and cathode. Those shorts usually occured within the diode section and were intermittent - take a screwdriver and knock the tube from different sides while the set is switched on. If it suddenly plays, you know what's up...
The poor isolation will generate a nasty scratchy sound and / or make the volume change heavily while tapping it. ---
Did you check the voltages applied to the tube within the set ? Due to mad screen / plate resistors, those voltages sometimes are too low.
Also check your tube for gas. A gassy tube will draw currents much higher than it should. But that will not happen with the grid bound to ground ! So, connect the grid across 1MegOhm to GND. Take a current reading. Afterwards, connect it to GND directly. The plate current must not be remarkably lower now, but it may be a bit higher now.

Hello Spiros,
if you need a new EAF801, a friend of mine has
quite a few,I believe he is asking about 7.5 Euros each, just let
me know if you're interested and I'll put you in touch.
Kind regards,

Spiros,
will do this, the only snag is that my friend isn't on the internet,
but I'll phone him on Wednesday, get him to give me all the
details, and then pass it on to you with his address,- I'll use
your direct email address.
Kind regards,
                         John Turrill.
