That is easy: You have to pull the knob to activate it.

Then the ferrite antenna is ON. If you push it in, it is OFF, and the external antenna input is connected to the receiver.

Thanks for your answer, I think the radio concerned with this has possibly had the volume potentiometer changed and this aerial on off function is no longer there.

The problem was solved, the knob was quite stiff but did move in and out.
