I am happy to be a new member of Radiomuseum.org.

I have a Saba Briesgau Automatic 8 in the shop for repair. The owner replaced the bad 0.8 ampere fuse with a 30 ampere fuse! This burned out the power transformer so I need to replace it. What is the required voltage on the center-tapped secondary winding of the power transformer? It appears that this transformer is used to power the motor tuning and muting circuitry.

The schematic for this radio is available from the radiomuseum.org archives but there are no voltages listed on the schematic.

Thank you for any reply that will help me select the correct transformer secondary voltage.

Best regards, Mark Palmquist

Dear Mark
This seems to be a difficult question - anyway only for specialists for this type of radio. Therefore I recommend that you translate your text via Google and to use the Flag for German to start a new thread for your question.

Normally this is done from the model because it is specific - but in this case it is better in Talk because there every member can answer you. You probably get the answers in GErman - but you could link also to your article here. Maybe then you get also an answer in English.

Good luck!

Mark this is a fast translation. Perhaps put it in a german thread, because the german speaking members perhaps don't read the english pages.

Best Regards

Georg

same trafo in Meersburg Automatic 8

Hi Mark,

please look to schema in Meersburg-Automatic 8. It uses the same transformer. There are the DC voltages printed. "Z" has -17V which may help you to calculate the AC Voltage between "Z" and "E".

The attached schema "Saba Motor-Elektronic 7"  shows 2*15V at the transfromer.

I hope that will help. Heribert Jung

Hi Mark,
I think, you can replace the transformer with an ordinary tube transformer which delivers about 230V plate and 6.3V filament voltage.
The auxiliary voltage for the motor control you can get from a center taped transformer
with about 2 x 15V. It seems, that the current is very low, if you look at the schematic, only resistors with high values are connected, so I expect only a few mA.
As Heribert mentioned this voltage is a good guess to start. You can connect this transformer input
to a rheostat and adjust the voltage that the DC values fit.
Then you have all the data to rewind or make a new one. Or, just use the 2 transformer solution I would prefer. Btw. Heater current should be about 7 amps at least !

Hi Mark,

I'll try a translation for you. Here is the text from Mr. Werner Hauf:

Hello Mr. Palmquist!

For this device, I can give you
a power transformer out of  a MEERSBURG AUTOMATIC 8 (identical ) for 25.00 EURO plus postage.
This is certainly easier than the defective transformer winding to new or
to use an external transformer.

Many greetings from the Ulm area

Werner Hauf

PS: Unfortunately I do not speak English. Would be someone so kind and translate it ? Already many thanks in advance.

Best regards, Michael Mehnert
