Description

Explore the heritage and discover what makes Port Alberni tick. Discover collections that tell the story of community history, Nuu Chah Nulth art and culture and our industrial roots from logging to fishing and farming - and see our unique folk art. The Alberni Valley Museum presents the cultural heritage of this unique Island community through its collections of artifacts and historic photographs.

It is considered one of the finest community museums in British Columbia. It uses a unique and experimental visible storage system to make almost the entire collection available to the visitor all the time. You can see temporary exhibits about Local and International Art, History, Culture and Science over the course of the year. The Museum also offers many varied and challenging school programs for a wide range of grades. We can help you do your research on local history or advise on heritage and preservation.

The Collections

You'll find one of the finest collections around of Nuu Chah Nulth basketry - the beautiful weaving with shore and sea grasses which Nuu chah Nulth women have done since traditional times.

Enjoy a unique collection of folk art made in the Valley - John Halfyard's whimsical dolls, Peter Szachiv's highly perfected cement, metal and woodwork, Cebal Ruel and Gaudiose Trembly's rustic figures and more.

Clothing, all manner of textiles and handwork, kitchen and laundry implements and woodworking tools tell of early life in the Valley. Agricultural equipment, and equipment from mining, fishing and logging inform us about our industrial past. Medical equipment, war medals, service club memorabilia, commercial objects and the old power generator document the growth of a community.

Listen to stories that tell how the now famous West Coast Trail had its beginnings as a telegraph line and a life saving trail for shipwreck victims. Our 17,000 historic photographs are available for research or reproduction on request.
