The Phonothèque québécoise / Musée du son shares and preserves our sound heritage. The Phonothèque adds to the store of knowledge and documentation about radio and the recording industry through its oral histories and sound archives and by means of its many activities, including: its documentation centre, web site, newsletter, talks, research and educational programs and its acquisitions policy (sound recordings, artefacts and documents).
Since 2012, the Phonothèque québécoise still exists, but has come to a standstill due to major changes in the way operating grants are awarded by the Ministère de la Culture, de la Communication et de la Condition féminine du Québec.
Although there are no longer any activities at the Phonothèque québécoise, the organization has not been dissolved in the strict sense. It still exists as a legal entity and is still considered an official NPO. There is no longer a physical office, no permanent staff, no official members, no board of directors, and no projects. The organization no longer offers any services to the public.
The Phonothèque québécoise website has not been updated since 2006. Following the decision by the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) to no longer host the site, Christian Lewis, former director of the Phonothèque québécoise, took the initiative of contacting Sandria P. Bouliane, former member of the Board of Directors, and Luc Desjardins, former Chairman of the Board, to find a solution for preserving the thematic files of the Phonothèque québécoise site, notably the interviews on sound heritage, and the history of record companies, recording studios and radio in Quebec. On this site, there are many texts, images and sound extracts that can be useful to the public and to researchers. Because of the historical nature of this content, we feel it is important to preserve it, despite its outdated presentation and design. |
