Harwich ist eine englische Hafenstadt im Südosten des Landes in der Grafschaft Essex. Aufgrund seiner Lage am Ästuar der Flüsse Stour und Orwell und dessen Bedeutung als einzig sicherer Ankerplatz zwischen Themse und Humber blickt der Ort auf eine lange Geschichte maritimer Bedeutung zurück.
Zwar ist die Royal Navy heute nicht mehr in ihrer 1657 eröffneten Marinebasis Harwich vertreten, aber noch immer ist Harwich International Port einer der wichtigsten Fährhäfen des Vereinigten Königreichs, mit Verbindungen über die Nordsee nach Hoek van Holland.
Description

This large circular fort was built in 1808 to protect the harbour from a Napoleonic invasion. The casemates (rooms for soldiers, stores and ammunition) now accommodate various military, bygone and maritime collections.
The maritime collections and displays include naval navigation equipment, naval uniforms, shipmodels, objects connected with lighthouses and lifesaving and the last Harwich whelk boat.
