Description

Exhibitions

The Schneeberg mining area

There is a showroom housed in a former site building, the “new smithy”, near the refuge. The permanent exhibition tells the story of the mining area on the Schneeberg. On display are everyday objects belonging to the former villagers, illustrated documents and mining tools. A model of the mining area shows the former buildings located there. The permanent exhibition is open all day every day from mid-June to mid-October. Admission free.

The miners’ settlement of St. Martin

The high plateau on the Schneeberg at 2,355 metres above sea level is also the location of the former miners’ settlement of St. Martin. Some residential and works buildings still remain of what was once Europe’s highest permanent settlement. Heavy equipment from the last excavation phase of the 20th century was simply left behind following the closure of the mine in 1985. There are sealed-off gallery mouths and slag heaps throughout the ore district that can be accessed via educational trails. The outdoor area largely tells its own story.
