North Canton was established as the village of New Berlin in 1831. Residents were primarily of German descent. During World War I, it became unfashionable to be associated with anything German so in 1918, the community changed the name of the village to North Canton.

Located on original Hoover family farmland in North Canton, Ohio, the Hoover Historical Center shares the legacy of The Hoover Company through free, guided tours.

Description

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
William H. “Boss” Hoover moved his tannery business from the family farm to the center of the New Berlin village in 1873. The first upright vacuum cleaner was invented in June 1908 in North Canton by department store janitor James M. Spangler. Hoover bought the patent, and The Hoover Company became the world's largest manufacturer of vacuum cleaners by the 1930s.

In 2007, Hoover officially shut down its production facility in North Canton.

The Hoover Historical Center

In 1978, the Hoover Company opened a museum in the old Hoover home in North Canton, Ohio on the campus of Walsh University. It is called The Hoover Historical Center, and is dedicated to the history of the Hoover company in Canton.

The museum exhibits include a number of non-Hoover hand-operated vacuum cleaners from before the company started, and displays of Hoover products throughout the company's history.

Also on display are some of the munitions the company produced during World War II to help the war effort, and Hoover family personal items.
