  • Altec "VOICE OF THE STARS" amplifier-mixer, model 356A. No information found on year of introduction; all indications suggest 1960 +/- 2 years.  Uses push-pull EL84 amp stage, 12AU7 driver, and two 12AX7's as preamps.  Designed to use optional plug-in microphone matching transformers.  Uses Peerless transformers, a company that was acquired by Altec.  Well-made steel chassis.  Steel cabinet with textured green finish.  The following specifications are quoted from manufacturer's installation manual.

    Power output:  18W at less than 2% THD from 70-15,000 Hz.  (26W music power output per EIA standard RS 234)

    Frequency response:  20-20,000Hz +/-1dB on high level input

    Frequency response:  30-10,000Hz +/-1dB on low level input

    Load impedance:  8 ohms, 16 ohms, and 250 ohms on 70V line connector

    High level input:  1M impedance; 370mV for rated output; barrier screw terminals can be set for "line level" or "phono"

    Low level input:  3.3M impedance; 3mV for rated output; XLR connector (intended for microphone)

    Noise level:  71dB below full output (high level); 52dB below full output (low level)
