The Marconi Model 75 Cone Speaker, introduced in 1928 by Amalgamated Wireless (Australia) Ltd, was the first speaker marketed under the ‘Marconi’ brand in Australia and closely resembled its British counterpart. This single-face cone speaker was engineered with robust metal supports to protect the cone, backing, and internal components from potential damage.
Acoustically, the Model 75 was designed to adhere to sound engineering principles, resulting in a tone that was described as sweet and mellow. It can accurately reproduce both high and low frequencies at any volume. The speaker’s mouth was covered with an oxidized metal grille encircled by a non-resonant wood board baffle, ensuring optimal acoustic performance for natural-sounding speech and music reproduction.
For user convenience, the adjustment screw for the cone diaphragm was positioned at the front, and the connection leads to the receiver were routed from beneath the oxidized metal base. The speaker featured a rich brown finish, harmonizing aesthetically with polished maple radio cabinets.
Physically, the Model 75 measured approximately 17 inches in diameter and stood 18.25 inches tall. The Australian version incorporated a wood fibre frame with a painted timber effect, a pressed aluminum surround with a bronze finish, a cast brass base with a timber insulating block, and brass spring terminals. Cast iron supports ran from the base to the top, providing additional protection for the lightweight, exposed cone, which rested on a felt or cork rim and measured 9.5 inches in diameter. The speaker used a twin-coil electromagnet (reed) driver.
The Model 75 was specifically designed to pair with Marconi Economy Valves, a combination that was highly regarded for its impressive and reliable audio performance, even by critical listeners.
