The Ampex models 400A and 401A are identical in every respect except for the head assembly. Model 400A incorporates heads to erase and record on only one-half of the stand-ard 1/4 inch tape. Model 401A incorporates heads to erase and record over the full width of the tape. Thus tapes recorded on the model 401A may be played back on the model 300 and model 201 recorders wihout pre-erasing the unused portion of the tape and without necessitating level adjustment.
