  • Two-slider Crystal Radio

A popular circuit used in simple crystal radios made before 1920. To tune in different stations, it used a tuning coil with two sliding contacts. No capacitor is necessary as the coil resonates with the capacitance of the long wire antenna to create a tuned circuit.

One slider tunes the receiver to different stations. The other slider adjusts the impedance match between the antenna and the rest of the circuit, to maximize the power transferred from the antenna into the receiver. It is adjusted until the station sounds loudest in the earphone connected to the two terminals on the left.

In the example shown the knob on the left is possibly a capacitor connected across the coil to aid in more precise tuning in conjunction with the sliders.
