The EMI SE 7000 tape recorder was notable for its portability and high-quality engineering, making it a favored tool for professional audio recording and research. It played a transitional role by supporting both analog and, with modifications, early digital recording experiments. Its use in pioneering digital projects helped bridge the gap between analog and digital audio technology in the professional recording industry.

It offered a comprehensive range of capabilities, from standard 14-track mid-band recording to high-density 42-track recording. Users can select from eight tape speeds, ranging from 15/16 to 120 inches per second (ips), which allows for a 600 kHz Direct Recording (DR) bandwidth or DC to 80 kHz FM recording at 120 ips. Furthermore, equalizers and filters for all tape speeds are included as standard features.
