  • Remarques
  • The record player was home-built in 1964 using a discarded 1957 BSR Monarch UA8 record changer, a very popular model in the UK during the late 1950s. The rexine-covered cabinet was obtained from a UK supplier, for drilling and fretwork by the purchaser. The 4 legs were purchased from a DIY shop. The amplifier is a 6 transistor model with a rated continuous rms output of 5W (peak 10W), purchased from Henry's Radio Ltd in London. It is powered at 17.5v (max 350 mA) and mounted on a metal plate as additional heatsink. Inputs are selected and amplified by a single transistor "Model MP1" multi-unit preamplifier from the same supplier. The preamplifier was powered by applying 17.5v to the 24v input and connecting the 12v and 40v inputs together.

The record player has an internal Goodmans 200 x 120 mm elliptical loudspeaker and an output jack socket for an external 3 to 5 ohm loudspeaker or amplifier. There is also a jack socket for a line input (100 Kohms impedance) to the internal preamplifier from an external audio source. Dual 78rpm/LP cartridge. Input selector, top-cut tone and volume controls.

In 1965 the record player was stolen during a burglary, and recovered a few weeks later by an undercover detective who was offered it by a fence. Since it was homebuilt, I was able to justify ownership to the authorities as the detailed design was unique and my name was written inside the box!
