  • Notes
  • A large variety of remateable connector models has been produced for the termination of single channel monomode and multimode fibre optic cables, such as SMA, ST, SC, FC and E2000 types. Most of these connectors have an external shell diameter of the order of 8 - 10 mm.

In 1996 LEMO SA introduced under the REDEL brand an RD-12 subminiature fibre optic connector family that has a plug diameter of only 3 mm and weighs less than 0.2 gm. The connector family includes a straight fixed coupler with a panel cut-out diameter of 3.6 mm, and pcb fixed sockets for TO18 active devices weighing about 2 gm and with a diameter of 6.8 mm.

The connector has a fully floating 1.25 mm diameter ceramic ferrule for monomode or 4 classes of multimode fibre, and a push-pull snap-on fastening system for which an insertion/extraction tool is available. The typical insertion loss with 50/125 micrometer fibre is around 0.3 dB, and the change of insertion loss during vibration tests to Boeing specifications and for equipment installed in helicopters is less than 0.15 dB.

The RD-12 family of optical fibre connectors was developed by Glen McFarlane in collaboration with Bruce Taylor.
