Marconiphone Universal Baby

The Marconiphone Universal “Baby” is a compact crystal receiver introduced around 1924 and sold under catalogue numbers B.135 and B.136a. The set is built on a flat oval ebonite base and employs variometer tuning, with a galena crystal and cat‑whisker detector enclosed in a dustproof glass cylinder. It was designed for short‑range medium‑wave reception from stations operating between 300 and 500 metres, typically giving clear results within about twenty miles when used with a good aerial. By withdrawing a plug and inserting the optional 1,600‑metre loading coil, the receiver is adapted for long‑wave operation and was intended to receive the BBC Daventry high‑power station at distances up to roughly one hundred miles. The instrument requires no power supply and operates with high‑impedance headphones. Terminals are provided for aerial and earth connections, and all fittings are nickel‑plated. Dimensions are approximately five inches wide and four inches high. The model was marketed as an inexpensive BBC‑approved domestic receiver and represents one of Marconiphone’s smallest crystal sets of the mid‑1920s.
