  • Modell: Detector - Marconi's Wireless Telegraph
  • Form
  • Diverse Formen, unter Bemerkung beschrieben.
  • Abmessungen (BHT)
  • 5 x 3.75 x 2.25 inch / 127 x 95 x 57 mm
  • Bemerkung
  • This was possibly used in the Marconi laboratories to experiment with crystal detectors.  This looks like a hybrid of a Carborundum and Pyrite detector.  It has a ball bearing globe adjustment and a micrometer adjustment for the pressure on the crystal.  Since Marconi's Wireless Telegraphy was using Carborundum detectors in their Newfoundland, Canada, to Clifton, Ireland stations in 1907, I believe this predates that.  (History of Telegraphy, Ken Beauchamp 2001).

The detector is described as a hybrid of a Carborundum and Pyrite detector, indicating it likely used two different materials known for their rectifying properties:

    • Carborundum (Silicon Carbide): Known for its stability and relatively low-voltage operation.
    • Pyrite (Iron Pyrite, or Fool's Gold): An early, common crystal detector material.
