  • Anotaciones
  • This is a spark gap for a U.S. Navy spark transmitter which is cooled and quenched by forced air from an external blower. The forced air cooling extends the life of the spark gap electrodes, and at the same time quenches the spark by quickly blowing out the ionized air between the spark gap. Note that quenching improves the efficiency of the spark gap by keeping the resistance of the gap high which otherwise would be reduced by the ionized air. This spark gap was used in standard Navy transmitters, typically less than 1 KW, for “Intra-Fleet” or ship-to-ship communication when the standard 5 KW 500-cycle Navy transmitter or higher power Arc transmitter was not needed. It was also installed in Naval high power land stations, generally for communicating with the fleet ships when they were in port, and for emergency communication purposes.
