  • The PRC-5 Radio was used during WWII for clandestine (e.g.spy) communication. Its technical manual (TM11-265) was classified SECRET in 1944 and remained so for 40-years until it was declassified in 1984. It is a suitcase portable 8-tube HF transceiver. It consists of a 2-tube, 10-16 Watt radio telegraph (e.g. CW, Morse code) transmitter, a 5-tube superheterodyne radio receiver, and a 1-tube 110/220VAC, 50-60-cycle power supply. The transmitter covers 4-16 MHz in 4-bands. The receiver covers 4.5-16 MHz in 2-bands. It requires 4 plug-in coils to operate over the full frequency range, and plug-in crystals at the desired transmit frequency or half the desired transmit frequency. It uses a military type J-37 telegraph key for operation.
