  • Neve 2254 (Original, 1969)

Designed by Rupert Neve and David Rees, the 2254 made its debut as a mono limiter/compressor module. It quickly gained a reputation as a studio staple due to its distinctive, warm tone and robust Class A circuit design.

    Key Technical Details:

    • Discrete, all-transistor Class A circuit throughout.
    • Transformer coupling on input, bridge-driver, sidechain, and output.
    • Diode bridge gain control provided the classic “musical” compression with slight harmonic coloration.
    • Attack time fixed at 5ms—this contributed to its signature “creamy” and thick sound.
    • Compressor ratios: 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 6:1. Threshold: -20dBu to +10dBu.
    • Limiter ratio: >100:1. Threshold: +4dBu to +20dBu.
    • Recovery (release): 400ms, 800ms, 1500ms, Auto (program-dependent).
    • Typical noise floor: -73dBm (20Hz–20kHz), typical for diode-bridge compressors.

    Notable Use:
Found in Neve 80 Series consoles, prized for “glue” on drum buses, vocals, guitars, and groups. Renowned for imparting warmth, roundness, and character to recordings.

    Major Revisions
