  • Notes
  • Neve 2254/A

A minor revision of the original, the 2254/A maintained the same essential design but with slight improvements, mostly relating to internal reliability and manufacturing. The “A” revision is often considered sonically identical to the original and just as revered.

    Key Technical Details:

    • Maintains a fully transformer-coupled, Class A signal path with discrete components.
    • Diode-bridge topology remains for gain control.
    • Attack time remains fixed at 5ms.
    • Four selectable release times plus “Auto” mode, which adapts to signal character for natural dynamic behavior.
    • The compressor and limiter operate with independent sidechains, offering full bypass.
    • Front-panel metering allows monitoring of input, control, or output signal.
    • Many “A” units included Marinair-spec transformers, a prized ingredient of the classic “Neve sound”.

    Application:
Especially valued for vintage analog coloration, it is often used for thickening drums, vocals, guitar buses, and more.

    Release Date:
    Shortly after 1969 (early 1970s)

    Major Revisions

    • 2254 (Original): Introduced in 1969.
    • 2254/A: Fixed slow attack, minor updates.
    • 2254/E: Allowed for faster attack choices.
    • 2254/R: Modern reissue; sweepable attack control, USB recall, rack format
