4&5 Tube AC-DC TRF

The Newman Stern 4&5 Tube TRF was made at Plant "A" in Chicago, likely indicating it had been made for the Newman-Stern department store by Clinton .  A very similar Clinton radio (similar chassis & dial/escutcheon, different cabinet) was made for Marshall.  The schematic on the bottom of the case shows a TRF with three different possible tube complements.  No specific model number is given. The schematic also shows three different possible ballast tubes.  The one in this set was determined to be a 185R8 based on the wiring, but the schematic also shows two other possible types, 50A2 or 55B2. The TRF circuit relies partially on regeneration.  The volume control is an RF gain control that variably grounds the antenna lead or the cathode of the 6D6 RF amplifier.

More details can be found in the article "Two Mid-1930s Minimalist Radios; Hot-chassis TRF sets from Pacific Radio & Newman-Stern", by RPost in the August 2026 issue of THE SPECTRUM MONITOR, pages 57-62.
