• Tuner unit can be used as a crystal set.

  Plugging a headset into the leftmost phone jack on the Detector-Amplifier unit replaces the crystal detector with a UV200 or UV201 detector. Plugging the headset into the middle phone jack adds one stage of amplification. Plugging the headset or a loudspeaker into the rightmost phone jack uses two stages of amplification.

  The Radiola V Model AR-885 was updated after just a few months by replacing the AA-1400 with an AA-1400A detector amplifier that used the new UV_201-A tubes (see  Radiola VA AR885A).

  According to RCA's AR-885 Operating Instructions, the only choices for tubes in the AR-885 are two UV-201 amplifier tubes and either a UV-200 or UV-201 detector tube.

  The metal tag on the front of the set will show that it is either a Radiola V Model AR-885, or a Radiola V Model AR-885-A.  A decal inside the Detector-Ampliffier unit will say either AA-1400 or AA-1400-A.
