Questo apparecchio, insieme al modello 1701 è nato come apparecchio portatile di piccole dimensioni, alimentato a batterie. In seguito (1956/1957) è stato modificato con la sostituzione delle valvole e con l'aggiunta dell'occhio magico, ed è stato dotato di un mobile in legno diventando un apparecchio da tavolo.
