Description This tube was the first spherical bulb type made by H. W. McCandless & Co for the de Forest company. Previously Audions were made with a T8 (one inch - 25mm) diameter and of tubular form. The tubular glass was not cheap and McCandless preferred not to use it. (he was given a certain amount of autonomy in making the Audions). As the standard bulb for most automotive headlights at the time (late 1908) was the G16 &1/2 size (54 mm), these were considered ideal for Audion manufacture. In all other respects, the Audion structure was the same. The first spherical Audions were single filament but emission was not as had been hoped. The next step was the double filament, soon to follow (Audion_09-dbw).
