Farmers was founded by Robert Laidlaw in 1909 as "Laidlaw Leeds" selling agricultural related goods through mail order catalogues. It was bought by Farmers Union members in 1910. In 1916 it was renamed as the Farmers Union Trading Co (Auckland) Ltd. The company expanded into retail and adopted the department store model. Farmers (Farmers Holdings Ltd) is still a going concern with 59 stores across New Zealand, specialising in family fashion, beauty, homewares, furniture, large appliances and whiteware. The former Farmers flagship department store site at 35 Hobson St (corner of Wyndham St), Auckland, is now occupied by the Heritage Auckland Hotel.
